Your owner’s manual should have a section that tells you how heavy — and in some cases how large — a load the vehicle can tow safely. Don’t exceed that limit — should something go wrong, you might not be able to claim your insurance. When you attach the camper to the tow vehicle, make sure you connect all safety chains or lines. You’ll need to hook up and check the camper’s wiring. Test the brake lights and turn signals before you go on your trip. Keep Reading Below The most important tip to remember when towing a camper is that practice makes perfect. Towing a large object can turn even the simplest of maneuvers into a tricky situation.

I could endlessly pack and re-pack, desperately trying to fit everything inside the van without everything being crammed, but whatever I did, it was always a no-go situation. A camping trip over the weekend in one camping site is one thing, but three or four weeks worth of travel moving from one place to another just threw me over the edge. Now I knew this particular issue was coming sooner or later and that I need to deal with it. Packing and re-packing for every overnight stay just to get the bed done in our camper van became a nightmare and on top of all that, all our camping gear had to stay out for the night.
Our camping chairs and table, the awning plus various other bits and pieces would be just fine without the rain or morning dew.

It really sticks in your mind when you screw up! LOL, I’m mostly kidding, but if not me, I’ve seen others’ problems or had to help them in some way. I love any form of camping and pretty much have done or do it all, frequently. Since I overplan everything and I am a bigtime gadget freak, I have been able to cover pretty much every option to create my successes and experiences and am able to pass them on since I’ve pretty much been there, done that.
In 2 days I leave for another trip. I drive with friends to the Eastern Sierras for hiking into the backwoods and drop off some supplies in Bear proof boxes , and I will be using Base Camp Tenting equipment.

It is not a guide on how to actually wire up equipment, terminate cables, use a soldering iron etc. It is not recommending which setups are good or bad. The drawings are not wiring diagrams, they are schematics showing topology only. All wiring should be done according to equipment datasheets and manuals. All designs should be checked and installed by a qualified auto-electrician. Every design is a compromise. This guide gives you the info you need to pick your compromise. Dual Battery Systems A dual battery system is where one or more auxiliary batteries are installed in addition to the standard starter battery of a car, 4WD or motorhome.
Dual battery systems are common in touring vehicles set up for camping, fishing and travelling around the outback. One or More Batteries Whether there are one or more auxiliary batteries, and whether they are installed in the vehicle, under the bonnet, in the passenger cabin, in the tray or in a trailer, does not effect the design arrangements outlined in this article.

Renting Cabin for Profit Voltage Differences: This can be confusing but the bottom line is they are referring to the exact same thing. With resistance in the wiring in your house, this V will likely have dropped to V by the time it gets to the appliance you are powering.

We have often talked about putting in a 30 amp breaker and RV style outlet for the camper at the house. Add to that any other electrical devices in your camper and you quickly see why a 30 amp electric supply is needed. Most standard household plugs only supply 15 amps, so using a common adaptor to allow the 30 amp RV plug to be inserted into a standard household 15 amp outlet may be quickly overloaded. While this adaptor may be safe to use in limited situations when you closely monitor what devices are being powered, I think the installation of a 30 amp RV style outlet.
It was only when our Air Conditioning went out at the house that we “needed” the camper to use as an “air conditioned lifeboat”!!

Wind your jockey wheel until the coupling lines up with the tow bar adapter or tow ball if you are using a traditional trailer hitch system. Remove the hitch pin as you roll the trailer gently forward so that the coupling and adapter line up. On a trailer with a tow ball coupling, the coupling should be sitting just above the tow ball.
Insert the hitch pin and secure with the o-ring clip at the base of the pin. At this stage, a traditional trailer will need to be lowered, allowing the coupling socket to latch onto the tow ball. The full weight of the trailer should now be supported by your tow vehicle. Lock the coupling clamp using the hitch pin or locking system on your trailer. Now we need to attach all safety chains. Most trailers feature two safety chains.
Always cross your chains before attaching them to the towbar tongue. The crisscrossed chains act as a fail-safe, hopefully catching your trailer in the event of a coupling failure and preventing it from completely detaching from your vehicle. Next, we connect our electrics.
